Academic License

Are you a student, faculty, or staff member interested in using The Machinery? Great! We love to see The Machinery used in educational settings.

If you don't need source access to the engine, you can use our Indie Free license. It's completely free and gives you full access to the engine.

If you are interested in getting your hands on the source code, we offer a special Academic License. The terms of this license are as follows:

  • The Academic License offers free access to the engine source code for students, faculty, and staff members at educational institutions (schools, universities, etc).
  • The Academic License is for non-commercial use only. For commercial use, you must use one of our other licenses (Indie Free, Indie Pro or Business).
  • To apply for an Academic License, you must have an email address from your school/university/etc. Typically, this would be a .edu email address, but we are aware that not all school use .edu domains, so this is not a requirement. Your license will be associated with this email address.
  • To apply for an Academic License, first set up an Our Machinery account with the email you want to use, if you haven't already done so, and then send an email with your email address and the URL of your school to [email protected].
  • Academic licenses are assigned on a per-calendar-year basis. I.e., all licenses granted in 2021 will be revoked at the end of the year. If you are still associated with the same educational institution and wish to continue using the license for 2022, you will need to apply again for a new license.
